The McNeese baseball team is second in the SLC after a week of ups and downs, losing its nationally leading 12-game winning streak in a midweek matchup against LSU, winning its Thursday matchup against the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders, then losing to the Islanders in today’s outing.
The Cowboys won the first of the three games against Texas A&M-CC Thursday with a score of 8-5, extended the home win and conference win streak to nine games. The team improved to 28-6 overall and 15-4 in league play, tying with Southeastern in Southland Conference records.
Hill, who entered the season with 333 all-time wins, recorded his 361st career win in the same game.
Today’s game, the Cowboys’ second against the Islanders in the three-game series, ended in a 5-13 loss, putting McNeese in second place in the conference standings, behind Southeastern and ending the home-game win streak. McNeese still holds the highest overall winning percentage of .794.
The two teams are set to take each other on again Saturday at Joe Miller Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. The game will be followed by the annual Easter Egg Hunt
Before Tuesday’s LSU game, the Cowboys held a 27-5 record overall and were tied for first place in the Southland Conference with a 14-4 league record. According to an article by Matthew Bonnette, Senior Associate AD/Sports Communications in McNeese, the Cowboys also boasted a .821 winning percentage, which was seventh-best in the nation.
Their 12-game streak was the longest active win streak in NCAA Division I 2025 season and the longest in program history, surpassing the previous high of 11 straight wins.
LSU came into the game on a 17-game home winning streak and extended it to 18 by defeating the Cowboys 10-3.
“I was extremely proud of the offense and what they did,” Head Coach Justin Hill said after the game. “I though our guys fought really well. I thought the offense was good. I thought we had some good moments pitching-wise, they just fought us a little bit differently. Credit to them and what they did. I didn’t think we lost the ball game, I thought they just won it.”
