Cowboy Football
McNeese Quarterback Jake Strong won the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the week despite a the Cowboys’ 41-42 loss to Weber State University Saturday.

Strong threw for 278 yards against the Wildcats, completing 20 of his 39 passing attempts, scoring two passing touchdowns in the process. Strong rushed for 45 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns. Strong is currently ninth in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in passing yards with 798 yards, throwing, on average, 266 yards a game. He is also 16th in the FCS in passing touchdowns with five successful passes.

McNeese now ranks 13th in the entire FCS in when it comes to the offense scoring efficiency, tied for sixth most touchdowns in the FCS. The team averages about 35 points per game which is the 12th most in the FCS.

When the Cowboys fought Weber on Saturday, they started out slow. The fourth quarter of the game found them down by 21 points against Weber. Less than 12 minutes later, the Cowboys had the chance to tie the game with the potential to bring it into overtime. The Pokes went for a 2-point conversion instead, taking a shot to win the game in a last-ditch effort to upset the Wildcats. The effort came too late, as the ball was tipped, preventing the Cowboys’ comeback victory.

“Not to take anything away from Weber, had a good game plan, and I thought they played good,” said Cowboys head coach Matt Viator. “But why are we down 21 points with 12 minutes left in the game? That’s the most important thing for me: why are we in that position in the first place?”
