The McNeese International Student Association held a career readiness workshop in collaboration with Career and Professional Development Services Wednesday ahead of McNeese’s Oct. 1 Career Expo.
The event, held at the Office of Career Services in Frazar Memorial Library, included topics such as delivery of elevator pitches and the importance of networking.
There will be a few more career development events similar to this happening this fall. The College of Business is hosting Poke Professionalism on Sept. 23.
“ISA organized the Career Workshop to support international students in navigating career development, which can look very different from country to country,” said Tekta Mequanent, president of the International Student Association. “The workshop was successful, covering networking, resume, and interview skills, while also introducing resources like the Career Services Office, Career Expo, and Internship Soirée. Our goal was to help students feel more prepared and supported as they work toward their future careers.”
Chelsey Cating, director of Career and Professional Development Services at McNeese, also provided a template to guide students in tailoring their resume and talked about other platforms, Focus2 and Handshake, job search platforms the university provides so students can connect with employers.
Toward the end of the event, she also carried out a resume review session.
Students attending said they found the event helpful.
“I do not usually go to events like these, but this event opened my eyes to the opportunities McNeese provides,” said sophomore Praise Olawale. “I got to learn about Handshake and Focus2 platforms on which I can look at if my personal plans do not work out. Ms. Cating looked at my resume and advised me on the changes I could make while applying to various Jobs.”
