McNeese Choir returned to the Student Government Association Wednesday to request a $2 fee increase after being rejected by the SGA last semester.

On March 26, the SGA denied the choir’s fee increase proposal with only five senators voting in favor, 20 against, and three abstaining. That same day, other student organizations, including the theater program and the band, successfully gained approval for their fee increases.

McNeese Theatre’s request to raise its fee from $2 to $5 was approved with 27 votes in favor and two against, and the band’s request to increase its fee from $9 to $11 passed with 18 senators in favor, nine against, and two abstaining.

Currently, the choir, which is comprised of around 70 students, receives $1 from every student on campus every fall and spring semester.

During their presentation at the SGA meeting, choir representatives said the fee increase would allow them to:

  • Increase recruitment opportunities.
  • Raise the quality of concerts.
  • Keep their concerts free.
  • Provide more music opportunities for students.
  • Establish an annual fall recruitment tour.
  • Establish a spring tour to provide an exceptional musical experience.
  • Increase community involvement.

Should the bill pass Oct. 1, the choir will be one step closer to receiving a $3 fee per student.

The bill would then move to the university president’s office for approval before being sent to the University of Louisiana Board for further review. If both approvals are granted, students will vote in spring 2026 on whether to approve the McNeese choir’s funding request.
