The Cowgirls got their first road win of the season against Nicholls Sunday in a 2-1 victory over the Colonels. They outshot Nicholls with their attempts to score, attempting 13 shots with 7 on goal to Nicholls’ 10 shots with 5 on goal. With just a minute on the clock, the Cowgirls’ redshirted junior, Alexi Pitt, scored the goal that sealed the win for the Cowgirls.

On Tuesday morning, Pitt was named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week, making her the first soccer player to earn the weekly honor from the conference.

The momentum did not last as the Cowgirls dropped a math against UIW Thursday. The Cardinals struck early on, scoring two goals in the first half and holding down defense to the end, leaving the Cowgirls with no chance to respond. The game ended on a sour note for the Cowgirls at 0-2, moving their season record to 2-8-3 overall, and their conference record to 1-2-1.

McNeese fell to 1-4 this season after Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks handed McNeese a 34–17 defeat to open Southland Conference play in the Sept. 27 matchup.

The Cowboys return home Saturday to play Southeastern at 6 p.m. in Navarre Stadium.

“It’s not the outcome we wanted,” McNeese head coach Matt Viator said of the loss to SFA. “The buzzword for me was frustrating. I think we talked about that last night, I did with the team.”

Viator said the battle was the match was the Cowboys’ best defensive play so far this season.

“I thought we really attacked, I thought we played with some confidence,” he said.

In the SFA matchup, the Cowboys struck first but couldn’t hold on. Tre’Vonte Citizen gave McNeese an early 7-0 lead 53 seconds into the match by scoring a 20-yard touchdown.

In the second quarter, Stephen F. Austin quarterback Sam Vidlak teamed up with Blaine Green for a 40-yard touchdown pass. Later, before halftime, Vidlak found Kylon Harris for a 14-yard TD to give the Lumberjacks a 14–7 lead heading to the break.

After the half, the Lumberjacks continued to put more points on the board. Vidlak extended the lead by connecting to Harris again on a 76-yard bomb. SFA added a field goal to push the lead further in the game. Fabrizio Pinton responded for McNeese with a 37-yard field goal, bringing the score to 21–10.

In the fourth quarter, SFA struck a 24-yard field goal before McNeese cut the lead to 27–17 with a 26-yard touchdown throw from Jake Strong to Logan Mauldin. But Jerrell Wimbley’s explosive 43-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes left gave SFA the win.
