McNeese lost 31-7 to Nicholls Saturday: another tough Southland Conference loss for the Cowboys.
The Colonels controlled both sides of the ball, holding the Cowboys to 264 yards of total offense to Nicholls’ 464 yards.
McNeese’s offense found the end zone once in the second quarter but couldn’t overcome Nicholls’ steady defensive pressure. With the loss, the Cowboys dropped to 2–6 overall and 1–3 in Southland play, while Nicholls improved to 4–4 and 3–1 in the conference.
Head Coach Matt Viator said the Cowboys struggled to find their footing in the first quarter of the game.
“You know, starting in the first quarter, you look at it, they [Nicholls] had 174 total yards in the first quarter,” Viator said. “We had 30 and we only ran 19 plays in the first half, not good. However, we kind of settled in, I thought, in the second quarter.”
McNeese quarterback Jake Strong completed 10 of 18 passes for 170 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.
The Cowboys look to bounce back this weekend when they host Northwestern State at Cowboy Stadium Saturday. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
