McNeese Campus Police advises campus residents to stay aware of their surroundings by trusting their intuition, avoiding shortcuts, staying in well-lit areas, and remaining mindful of those around them.
According to the Oxford Research Encyclopedia, Routine Activity Theory is a criminology framework that states crime requires three elements: a motivated offender, a suitable target, and the absence of a capable guardian.
The Virtual Walkhome feature on the McNeese Safe App helps students remove two of those elements. With this tool, campus safety officials can monitor an individual in real-time as they head toward their destination using their device’s location services.
How to Use The App:
Once the app is open and the Virtual Walkhome button is tapped to start, the following steps occur:
- Dispatch Confirmation: Dispatch confirms they are ready to monitor the journey.
- Destination Selection: The destination is selected on the provided map.
- Commence Walk: The travel begins.
- Emergency Assistance: If help is needed at any point, the “Emergency” button can be tapped for immediate assistance.
- Completion: Upon reaching the destination, tap “Finish Tracking” to end the session
