The Muslim Student Association is working on making a mark on campus after returning from a period of inactivity.
Originally founded in 2023, the organization was revamped in August 2025 by senior and club president Arisha Awan with the goal of providing community for Muslim students at McNeese State University.
The organizationโs mission centers on fostering spiritual growth, strengthening relationships among students, and promoting understanding, inclusivity, and cultural awareness.
โItโs important for Muslim students to find a community,โ said sophomore Fatima Khan, secretary of the association. โI want all students to know that they are not alone. MSA can help students form bonds and connect.โ
Since their recent reinstatement as a McNeese organization, members have begun organizing meetings, participating in campus events, and reaching out to new students who may be searching for a sense of belonging.
The club operates with five leadership chairs, supported by a growing membership base that helps plan and run events. Leaders say this structure allows more students to contribute ideas and participate in shaping the future of the organization.
โWhen I got involved with MSA, I was used to having leadership roles in Muslim organizations, including regional positions and other responsibilities,โ Khan said. โI feel like itโs my duty to help the club grow and bring more people in.โ
Since returning, MSA has hosted general body meetings, tabled during Preview Day, and formed community partnerships. The organization frequently collaborates with the Islamic Society of Lake Charles, strengthening ties between students and the local Muslim community.
During general meetings, members gather for games, conversations about Islamic teachings, food, and discussions where students can share experiences and ask questions. At a recent meeting, the group focused on preparing for Ramadan, the upcoming Islamic holy month observed by Muslims worldwide.
Awan said some of the most meaningful moments have come from outreach events that introduce prospective students to the organization.
โMy favorite memory would have to be tabling at Preview Day,โ Awan said. โGetting to meet younger students and letting them know that we exist on campus, and that they could find a safe space in MSA, was really rewarding.โ
