McNeese Cowboys baseball traveled into Baton Rouge’s Alex Box Stadium Tuesday and walked out with one of the biggest wins in program history.
The Cowboys shocked the defending national champion LSU Tigers, 7–6, snapping a two-season spanning 16-game winning streak.
LSU jumped out early with a two-run home run in the first inning from LSU first baseman Zach Yorke, but McNeese answered immediately. The Cowboys put together a four-run second inning; Seth Fontenot got the rally started, and Danny Barbero’s two-run single helped the Cowboys take a 4-2 lead.
The Cowboys blew the game open in the fourth inning, scoring three more runs including an RBI single by Larry Edwards Jr. to go up 7-2 and forcing LSU to dig deep into their bullpen.
The Tigers chipped away late, scoring in multiple innings including a homerun from John Pearson.
The Cowboys’ bullpen held down the game, shutting the door on LSU’s comeback attempt
and sealing the one-run upset. On the mound, McNeese’s bullpen was key with Jairus Miller earning the win with three innings pitched and five strikeouts and Brady Corcoran closing it out.
The win marked a huge victory for McNeese and served as an early-season wake-up call for
LSU.
The Cowboys have a three-game weekend series on the road against Nicholls.
