Cowgirl Soccer
McNeese soccer ended their three-game losing streak on the road with two straight wins over Louisiana Tech Sept. 3 and Grambling State Sunday, Sept. 6, improving their record to 5-3.
The Cowgirls entered the game against Louisiana Tech trailing 5-6-1 in the all-time series record against the Bulldogs. However, with the younger core that Coach Alexsis Cable has brought to McNeese winning 2-0, the Cowgirls have tied that record to 6-6-1.
Freshman midfielder Caitlyn Trosclair recorded her first collegiate goal in the 38th minute off a corner kick by senior forward Morgan Fielder. Sophomore Vitoria Mitre scored McNeese’ second goal, with freshman Isabella Baltov recording her first career assist.
Louisiana Tech took 11 shots in the match, but sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Dempsey kept the Bulldogs scoreless. By the end of the match, the Cowgirls had been called for 12 fouls, compared to five for Louisiana Tech and received the game’s only yellow card.
McNeese followed the win with a 1-0 victory over Grambling State. Sophomore forward and midfielder Sumayah Brown scored the lone goal of the game in the 16th minute. Brown, off an assist by fellow sophomore forward Rhiannon Maynes-Tourond, was the most offensively aggressive taking three shots on the goal.
Dempsey made four saves on all four shots taken at the goal by Grambling.
Following the two wins, McNeese earned Southland Conference weekly honors for the third time this season. Senior Rebecca Romero was named Defensive Player of the Week while Dempsey earned Goalkeeper of the Week.
The Cowgirls’ five wins are already their most in a season since 2023, with their 5-3 start being their best start through eight games since 2021 when McNeese opened 5-2-1.
McNeese is currently third in the Southland Conference standings
According to Cable, the team’s young roster has played a good role this season.
“I think the best part is we’re so young,” Cable said. “Our last starting lineup had five freshmen in it. So, the fact I can have five freshmen against a Sun Belt opponent and come out with a win I think is phenomenal.”
Cable also said that though the team may have less experience than other Southland Conference teams, they plan to bring a fight to the Conference.
“We might be young, whereas I think they have a little more experience, but my kids come out hungry and come out ready to battle and that’s what I stress to them.”
The Cowgirls will travel to Huntsville, Texas to play against Sam Houston this Sunday at 4 p.m.
