McNeese Frazer Library will host a scavenger hunt Saturday, Sept. 26, at 9 a.m. to allow students time to explore the library while searching for hidden treasures throughout the building.
Information Literacy Coordinator Taryn White said there are two main reasons behind the event.
“The first was the number of students we encountered who just didn’t know we had four floors in the library, so we were looking for an activity that would highlight student resources and encourage students to engage with them,” White said. “The second was a desire to give back to our students and our community.”
Students can begin their search when doors open at 9 a.m. with the event concluding at 5 p.m.
Students will be able to search for blue and gold tickets hidden throughout the library’s four floors. Each ticket will have instructions directing students to return it to the front desk, where it can be redeemed for a prize.
Prizes include gift cards from local businesses and restaurants, game passes, gift baskets and more.
“The prize that I’m most excited about is a painting we received, but I have a feeling students will be most excited about the gift basket from Raising Cane’s or game passes from Louisiana Escape Room,” White said.
Some of the donors that made the prizes possible include Frog, Kona Ice, the McNeese Team Store, Petro Bowl, Putt-Putt and others.
White said the scavenger hunt has a purpose beyond giving away prizes.
“We really hope that they learn about the number of resources we have available for them here as well as the massive amounts of study spaces in our building,” White said. “On top of that, exchanging tickets for a prize functions a lot like checking out material, whether that’s a book, laptop, study room or a textbook on reserve, so we’re also hoping to expose students to that process in a less intimidating and more rewarding way so that they might be more encouraged to use the resources they discover more often.”
